Today we are going to have a look at some of the more popular futons sold by Ikea. Ikea is known around the world for making a large range of affordable furniture, but are their futons worth your money? We will try to answer that below, so keep reading to find out more. We are also going to have an in depth look at some of the best sellers in their product range, and you can skip straight onto the products section over here if you want to see those. First though lets talk about Ikea itself, and why their futon range is so popular.
Ikea was formed in 1943 in southern Sweden, and is one of the largest manufacturers of furniture in the world. Since their formation they have gone from strength to strength, and as of 2016 they have over 380 stores operating in 48 countries. They have built up a trustworthy reputation over the course of the past 70 years, and this is one of the reasons why they have been so successful. One of the main draws of their products are the complimentary product lines. For example if you buy a sofa bed, there is a good chance that there will be a matching cupboard or bedside table which is part of the same product line. This makes the task of decorating your home a bit easier, as it is simple to keep the look and feel coordinated. One of the other reasons that people choose to buy their futons is the fact that there is such a big range to pick from. They have simple no frills budget models, and also luxury models for upmarket homes, and everything in between. They also sell covers and replacement mattresses for some of the models, giving you the option to customize the look and feel, and replace the mattress when it is worn out. This customizability and availability of replacement mattresses is what puts Ikea above some of the other choices when it comes to buying a futon.
Now let’s take a look at some of the more popular choices on the market.
Recommended futon – BALKARP
If you are on a very tight budget, then the Balkarp sofa bed may be perfect for you. It is the cheapest model currently sold by Ikea, and retails for a very reasonable $89.99 at the time of writing. It comes in a softer blue shade, however the cover is not removable. Given the low price though, this is to be expected. We should note though that there are some covers available for sale on Ebay, although they are quite pricey!
This model can be used in the standard upright position, a semi reclined position, or laid out flat to make a bed. It certainly isn’t the fanciest futon Ikea makes, but if you only need something basic then this one is worth a look as you will have a hard time finding anything else in that price range.
Recommended futon – BEDDINGE LÖVÅS
If you are looking at spending a little more, then the Beddinge Lovas is another good choice. This model retails for $249.99, and comes in three color choices of red, light grey or turquoise. The different color covers are all sold separately, so if you decide you want a change of color, it is as easy as buying a new one and putting it on. The mattress for this model is also sold separately, which is ideal if you think it may need to be replaced in a few years. On the left side of the cover are two slots, which are perfect for housing tv remotes or other small items. This futon is compatible with the Beddinge storage box, which can be attached below and gives you enough space to store all your bedding and pillows. It has a firm foam mattress, and easily converts to a bed designed for two.
With interchangeable covers, a replaceable mattress, and the option of adding a storage box underneath, it is easy to see why this is one of the best selling Ikea futons.
Recommended futon – LUGNVIK Sectional
For those of you looking for a sectional style futon, be sure to have a look at the Lugnvik model. This model retails at around $499, and comes in either black or red. Underneath the main seating are is a storage box, which provides more than enough room for blankets and bedding. The side chaise can be fitted to the left or right of the main sofa, and changing between the two side is quick and easy. This model adds a classy look to your room, and is a simple way to add an extra bed to the room without spending a fortune.
Recommended futon – VALLENTUNA Sectional

Two of the pieces are the bed sections, which can be unfolded and slept on when required. The other three pieces all have storage space underneath them, and can even be folded up and put away when not needed. This is great if you want to keep the area clutter free, but need to extra seating space when you have guests over. They can also be folded and uses as footrests, or even put back to back against the other pieces. There are a lot of different ways you can use them, so it’s all up to you on how you want to utilise your seating area. There are a number of different color choices here to pick from including grey, light grey, green, beige, light beige, beige & green, black, and orange.
