Anka High Chair
Choosing a high chair for your little one can sometimes be tricky, as there are a few different factors to consider. First and foremost for most parents is the safety aspect, as keeping your little one as safe as possible is absolutely vital. However there are other factors to keep in mind such as the ease of use, cleaning and cosmetic appearance to think about. In this article we are going to have a look at the Svan Anka High chair. This is a wooden style high chair, designed to look good and provide a secure and comfy fit for your child. But how reliable is it? And is it worth considering? Let’s see if we can answer that below.
Is Svan a Reliable Brand?
The first thing many people do when considering a product is looking at the reputation and reliability of the brand. So who are Svan? They are a company from Sweden, who have been making children’s furniture and toys for quite some time. The Swedish have a long history with making furniture, and a number of notable companies have come out of the country over the years such as the world renowned Ikea for example. They began by producing goods for the Swedish market, but their reputation for making quality goods helped them to gain a big following. Soon they began to export their products to other countries including the USA. While we don’t want to go into the complete history of Svan, we think it is safe to say that they have a reputation for making decent affordable products.
A closer look at the Svan High Chair
Now let’s take a look at the Anka chair. With the majority of high chairs available today being made out of plastic, it is quite refreshing to see a high chair that has a more classic wooden design. This chair retails for around $199, so let’s see what that gets you.
This chair comes in a variety of different color finishes including Espresso (pictured), Honey and Natural. All three color choices are nice, but the Espresso one is the standout one in our opinion. The seat has a cream color cushion, which contrasts nicely against the dark brow Espresso finish. This cushion is machine washable, which makes clean-ups nice and simple. The fold down tray area has a plastic cover, which this can be removed altogether or folded to the rear of the seat with the wooden tray when it is not required. This tray is dishwasher safe so you can clean it that way, or alternatively rinse it off in the sink as it is quite small.
The nice thing about this particular seat is that it can be converted to a booster seat. This means it it can support a child up to 5 years old, or up to 50 pounds. The way this is done is by adjusting the t-bar, since it can be set closer or further to the child as required. The foot stand can also be lowered to accommodate the growing child, and there are four levels it can moved down over the years.
A safety harness is included to keep your child safe. This is a 3 way harness, which has a variety of safety certifications so it looks very trustworthy. When the chair is not needed, it can be folded up to move it out of the way. It doesn’t take up too much space when it is folded, with dimensions of 38″H x 19.5″W x 10.5″D. On the surface it looks like a nice chair, and there doesn’t seem to be any obvious design flaws.
Are there any downsides?
Ok, so it sounds good so far doesn’t it? However there are a few issues with this chair that are worth mentioning. There is a minor issue with the plastic tray, as it doesn’t clip to the tray area very tightly. This means there is a little play in it, and a small child could get their fingers caught between the plastic tray and the wooden tray underneath. This can be remedied using a bit of UHU Tac or something similar to hold the plastic tray down, or even using some adhesive velcro to stick the plastic tray to the wooden tray area. It’s not a huge problem, but certainly worth mentioning as it seems to be commonly talked about.
The other main issue with this chair is the finish. Since children are naturally inquisitive, children’s products need to be very safe. And for this reason the chair has a non-toxic finish, in case the child bites down on it. Unfortunately the non-toxic finish is not as durable as ordinary paint, so it has been known to start peeling after a few months. A quick fix to this is to use a polyurethane based paint, which will last for many years. However this kind of paint is certainly not safe to bite into, so should only be done when the child is a bit older and less likely to do this!
And finally there have been some user reviews saying this chair is hard to clean. This is not quite as serious as the other two issues, as this is a common issue with many high chairs. However there are a number of awkward nooks and crannies in this chair, which can make cleaning a little tricky. Don’t let this be a deciding factor though, as it is not a big problem in our eyes.
Is this the right chair for you?
As mentioned above, there are a couple of minor issues with the Anka chair. If those issues don’t bother you too much, then this chair will serve you well. If not, then you might be better off looking for a more suitable model. There aren’t a huge variety of wooden high chair models for sale, so this chair is one option. If you are still on the fence about this model, then be sure to read a few user reviews first. Amazon has quite a few reviews for this particular model, and you can have a look at those over here. Hopefully these will help you make up your mind, and give you a better idea of whether to buy it or look elsewhere.
